Our Mission
To bring light to one of the darkest times in a child’s life.
DARK is a nonprofit organization with a simple mission of expressing the compassion that Jesus Christ would have shown to children of divorce. Although research studies are conflicted on the actual rate of divorce in our society particularly among those with Christian backgrounds(1), we know that it affects a large number of Oregon families. The idea behind DARK is to bring encouragement to children particularly between ages 5-13 who are going through the initial psychological upheaval of separation/divorce.
Objectives & Milestones
- Our pilot project is started with three Seventh Day Adventist churches: Pleasant Valley SDA Church, Sunnyside SDA Church and Sharon SDA Church. Since then, we have expanded to other Seventh Day Adventist families and churches statewide, and eventually expand to all families in Oregon.
- Deliver a greeting card with words of encouragement to the child(ren) going through divorce.
- Enclose a gift certificate for a family meal and a small token of affection such as a backpack (for carrying clothes back and forth), a stuffed animal (object of comfort) or depending on the age of the child, tickets to a family event (movie or ballgame, etc). The idea is to provide a cost-free time to connect with his/her family despite all of the chaos in their lives.
